Sod Calculator
Calculate rolls and pallets for a new lawn
Enter your lawn dimensions to calculate sod requirements. The AI will provide installation and biological establishment insights.
β What This Calculates + Why It Matters
The Sod Calculator is a precision turf-planning tool designed to determine the exact amount of pre-grown grass needed to provide an 'Instant Lawn'. Unlike seeding, which can take weeks to germinate and months to establish, sodding provides a fully mature biological carpet the moment it is laid. This calculator determines your Total Square Footage, the number of Sod Rolls required, and the total Pallets you need to order, including a customizable Wastage Factor for irregular yard shapes and edges.
Why does precise sod estimation matter? Sod is a 'living, perishable product'. Once it is cut from the turf farm, the roots begin to dry out and the internal temperature of the pallet can rise due to biological respiration. If you under-order, you face the high cost of a second delivery and a patchy-looking lawn. If you over-order, you are left with expensive rolls of grass that will quickly 'die' on the pallet. This tool helps you hit the logistical 'Sweet Spot', ensuring you have enough material to finish the job in one session while minimizing waste.
Using this tool moves you from 'rough guessing' to Project Readiness. It allows you to coordinate with sod farms, rental companies (for soil rollers), and labor crews with a data-driven plan for success.
The 'Pallet' Standard
While sod sizes vary by region, a standard Pallet of Sod typically covers 450 to 500 square feet. This calculator uses 450 SF as a conservative baseline to ensure you don't run short. A single roll of sod is typically 2 feet by 4.5 feet (9 square feet).
β The Formula Explained Simply
The calculation is based on simple area geometry with a critical safety margin for cutting:
Total Area (SF) = (Length Γ Width) Γ (1 + Waste %)
Total Pallets = Total Area Γ· 450
Common Waste Factors:
- Perfect Rectangles: 5% Waste.
- Curvy Beds/Edges: 10% Waste.
- Complex Circular Lawns: 15% Waste.
β 3-5 Real-World Examples
Example 1: The Backyard Renovation
Area: 40ft x 50ft | Waste: 5%.
Requirement: 2,100 SF (~4.7 Pallets)
Assessment: This project will require 5 full pallets. You will have about 150 SF of 'extra' sod for patching or tight corners.
Example 2: The Narrow Side-Yard
Area: 10ft x 40ft | Waste: 10%.
Requirement: 440 SF (~1.0 Pallet)
Assessment: A single pallet is perfect for this project. The 10% waste is vital because narrow strips require more 'cutting-to-fit'.
Example 3: Large Estate Lawn
Area: 100ft x 100ft (1/4 Acre) | Waste: 5%.
Requirement: 10,500 SF (~23.3 Pallets)
Assessment: This is a major installation. You will need roughly 24 pallets and a crew of 4-6 people to ensure the sod is laid before it gets too hot on the pallets.
β FAQ Section (Google PAA Targeted)
How long can sod stay on a pallet before it dies?
In hot weather (above 80Β°F), sod should be installed within 24 hours. In cooler weather, you may have up to 48 hours. If the sod starts to turn yellow or feels hot to the touch in the center of the pallet, it is beginning to die and must be unrolled and watered immediately.
How much water does new sod need?
Immediately after installation, you should water the sod until the soil underneath is thoroughly soaked. For the first two weeks, you must keep the sod 'consistently moist'. This often means watering 2-3 times per day in short bursts until the roots have knitted into the soil.
Should I fertilize before I lay sod?
Yes. We recommend applying a Starter Fertilizer (high in phosphorus) to the bare soil just before laying the sod. This provides the 'fuel' the roots need to anchor quickly. However, avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers which can 'burn' the sensitive new roots.
Can I lay new sod over existing grass?
No. This is a common mistake. Laying sod over existing grass prevents the new roots from reaching the soil. You must remove the old grass, till the soil, and level it before laying the new sod for it to survive long-term.

Our AI Turfgrass Specialist analyzes your sod volume to identify 'Establishment Risks'. It doesn't just calculate pallets; it provides biological installation advice. If your area is large, the AI highlights 'Thermal Respiration'βexplaining how to manage delivery timing. If you have a high waste factor, the AI focuses on 'Seam Integration'. This ensures your 'Instant Lawn' stays green and healthy for years to come, turning a physical installation into a successful biological transplant.

Sod is typically sold by the pallet (approx 450 sq ft). We recommend adding a 5% waste factor to account for cutting and fitting around edges.
