โ How Much Topsoil Do I Need?
The Topsoil Calculator is designed to take the guesswork out of landscaping. Whether you are filling a new raised bed, top-dressing a lawn, or preparing a foundation for sod, knowing the exact volume of soil required is critical for budgeting and logistics. Ordering too little leads to expensive "short-load" delivery fees, while ordering too much leaves you with an unsightly pile of dirt on your driveway.
Topsoil is typically sold by the Cubic Yard. One cubic yard is a cube that is 3 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 3 feet deep (27 cubic feet). This calculator performs the conversion from standard dimensions (Length x Width in feet, Depth in inches) into the industry-standard yardage and estimated weight in tons.
โ The Formula Explained Simply
Calculating soil volume is a three-step process:
1. Square Footage: Length (ft) ร Width (ft) = Area (sq ft)
2. Cubic Feet: Area ร (Depth / 12) = Cubic Feet
3. Cubic Yards: Cubic Feet / 27 = Cubic Yards
To estimate weight: Most topsoil weighs approximately 2,200 lbs per cubic yard (1.1 tons). However, wet soil can weigh significantly more, sometimes exceeding 1.3 tons per yard.
โ FAQ Section
What is the best depth for topsoil?
For a new lawn, we recommend 4 to 6 inches of quality topsoil. For garden beds, 8 to 12 inches is ideal to allow for deep root penetration. For simply top-dressing an existing lawn, a depth of 1/4 to 1/2 inch is sufficient.
What is the difference between topsoil and garden soil?
Topsoil is usually the top layer of earth stripped from a field. It may contain weed seeds. Garden soil is topsoil that has been screened (to remove rocks) and enriched with compost or peat moss for better drainage and nutrition.
How much does delivery cost?
Most landscape supply yards have a minimum for delivery (usually 3-5 yards). Delivery fees vary by distance but typically range from $50 to $150 per load. Ordering in bulk (10+ yards) usually offers the best price per yard.
