Why are onions and garlic toxic to dogs?

Onions, garlic, chives, and leeks belong to the Allium species and contain organosulfoxides (such as N-propyl disulfide). These compounds cause oxidative damage to red blood cells, leading to Heinz body hemolytic anemia.

How much onion is toxic to a dog?

Toxicity occurs when a dog ingests more than 0.5% of its body weight in onions (approx. 5 grams of onion per kilogram of body weight). Garlic is about 5 times more concentrated and potent than onions.

Are cooked or powdered onions safe for dogs?

No! Cooking, boiling, drying, or powdering onions does NOT destroy the toxic organosulfoxide compounds. Onion powder is actually concentrated and poses an even higher toxicity risk per gram.
