1. Biochemical Overview
Cellular respiration converts biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), releasing metabolic waste products. It comprises three primary pathways: Glycolysis, the Citric Acid (Krebs) Cycle, and Oxidative Phosphorylation.
2. Net ATP Stoichiometry
Under aerobic conditions, complete oxidation of one mole of glucose yields approximately 30 to 32 moles of ATP:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ~30-32 ATP
